ASSOUAN DAM

CONTRACT FOR COMPLETION

OBTAINED BY ENGLISH FIRM

CAIRO, 2nd December. The contract for ithe completion of the Assouan Dam has been awarded to Topham, Jones, Bailton, Limited, of London. The above message recalls the tragic cirenmstances surrounding the recent death of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Norton Griffiths, governing director of the well-known London firm of Norton, Griffiths, and Co., public works contractors. Sir John was seen to go out in a small boat from Bamleigh in the morning. He paddled for some distance, then observers ashore noticed that the boat was drifting apparently unoccupied. Swimmers hastened to the spot and found Sir John Griffiths lying in the bottom of the boat dead from a bullet wound in the right temple. Sir John came to Egypt to clear up a disputo between the Egyptian Government and his firm regarding the Assouan Dam heightening contract, the British engineers alleging that it was impossible to carry on in the face of constant pin-pricks and obstruction arising from the incompetence of inexperienced Egyptian inspectors.
