AMERICAN" ATHLETES' VISIT

It has been suggested that the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre might consider the question of inviting J. Carlton, Australian sprint champion, to the Dominion- to compete- against the American, George.Simpson, in Wellington in February. The trip, it is estimated, would not cost much, and most certainly the- enterprise or! the centre, should it decide to go ahead with the proposal and the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Council gives its sanction, would be amply rewarded. A few years ago when the American trio, Morris-."Kirkscy, George Krogness, and Jack Merchant, were in New Zealand, A. W. ("Slip") Carr, then Australia's star sprinter, was brought to tho.Dominion to meet Kirksey, and no doubt there aro many who still remember ; hia great raeo in a. special 100 yards contest against tho American at Athletic Park. . •.- . Carlton will be remembered for outstanding performances in tho 100 yards and 220 yards events at the last Australian aiid Now Zealand championship meeting at Athletic Park in 1927. Tho' following year ho represented Australia at. the Olympic Games at Amsterdam,; and since his return has registered some brilliant performances. At the present time- ho is in great form. . .Recently. . hc_ broke "even" time for.the 100 yards, twice within eight days.
