HELPING THE UNEMPLOYED

The Mayoress's room at the" Town Hall was filled yesterday afternoon when those who are interested in the fund for the Christmas requirements of the 'families of the unemployed, met Mrs. Troup witJi tho- object of arranging a collecting' day. Mrs. Troup explained that it was hoped to raise a good sum, as the Government had promised a generous subsidy, which would enable something to be given to those men with families who were likely, to have.a.specially hard time when most people were making holiday and there would be little or no work doing. Mrs. Troup said she would be absent from Wellington, and thereforo Lady Luke, was elocted to the chair, with Mrs. Peter Praser as vice-chair-man. Mrs. J. Pow undertook tho secretarial, work, and it was decided to.arrango for the "street day" to take place on Weduesday, 10th December, when it is hoped that all who can contribute even the smallest coin will do so, as otherwise there will be many who will have but a sad season at Christmas time. The next meeting will be held at tho E.S.A. rooms on Monday afternoon, when badges will bo given out. Mrs. Troup announced that she had received a letter of sympathy with the object from Lady Bell with a cheque for £5, and she had been told of other' donations which would be given. Therefore she left the'matter in the hands of the committee with confidence that the effort would be a thoroughly successful one. . The following stands were allotted: —Bowen street and Quinton's Corner, Mrs. P. Traser, Mrs. M'Keenj Kirkcaldio's and D.1.C., St. John Ambulance Brigade and Nursing Divisions; Stewart Dawson's Corner, Mrs. J. Pow and Mrs.-S. Myers; Boulcott street corner, Y.W.C.A.; James Smith's corner, Mrs. Snow and Mrs. E. Seinple;' Courtenay place, Mrs. Cameron: Veitch and Allan's corner, Salvation Army; Kelburn tram, Mrs. Kowntrec and' Mrs. Carroll.
