MR. THOMAS TAKEN TO TASK

"Mr. Thomas condemned beyond possibility of further discussion in language deeply resented by the Government of Canada the proposal I made in a sincere 'desire to meet our individual and common needs," says Mr. Bennett, Prime Minister of Canada, in a statement referring to Mr. J. H. Thomas's speech in the House of Commons oa Empire trade, in.which he characterised the Canadian preference proposals made to the Imperial Conference aa humbug. ' Mr." Bennett declares: "Mr. Thoniag used terms, unusual as they are injurious, of a proposal we believe contains the best solution of the urgent, problem of closer Empire economic association. I refrained from an earlier allusion in the hope and expectation, that the. far-reaching consequences which must inevitably attach to his statement would have compelled its denunciation hy the British Government, whose failure to do so must ba construed as an endorsement thereof."
