A CRISIS THREATENED
GOVERNMENT ASKS FOR TRUCE
(British Official Wireless.) (Received Ist December, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, 29th November. The Government took prompt action last night following an unexpected decision reached by a majority vote at the Miners' Federation Delegate Conference, refusing permission to districts to accept a sp'readover of hours. A further meeting of the Federation is fixed for Tuesday. The Coal Act, which comes into operation on Monday, allows the spreadover schemes to be operated in districts, but gives the Miners' Federation the power of veto. This veto the Federation exercised, despite the fact that the schemes had been accepted in the five districts of North Wales, Cumberland, North Staffordshire, Leicestershire, and Bristol. It is understood that the Miners' Federation reached its decision contrary to the advice of officials. ,
