END-TO-END WINNERS

TRIAL PLATE. IN DIVISIONS

Both divisions of the Aorangi Trial Plate were.won from end to end, and in each case the winner was called on to. withstand -a. determined challenge in the straight, and succeeded in doing so only by a narrow margin. Knollmere, who scored in the second section, probably gave a more striking performance than the winner ;pf the first section, Seneschal, for his time was over a second better. ■:^9.'^e.,&st. division, Seneschal, Laconic, Tar Baby, Baskier, and Catherine of, Aragon were the early leaders, and Seneschal and Laconic had a. good advantage at'the entrance to the straight from Baskier, Catherine of Aragon, Tar Baby Myola, and Enter. The first-named pair had the finish to themselves, Seneschal hanging on to beat Laconic by a head. Basker was two lengths away third, and oex i /were Catherine of Aragon, Myola, lar Baby, Protbmint, and Enter. _In the second division. One Pai bolted before the race, and then over the early stages of his division, and he finished last.-Lone JRaider lost his chance by failing to go off smartly, but he was doing it well at the close. . Seneschal, who was having his sixth race, is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Chief Ruler from the Elevation mare "Event. He is owned by Messrs. Marshall and Pearce, and is trained at Marton by F. C. F. M'Kay. Knollmere, who was having his first race, is a three-year-old brown' gelding by Grandcourt from the Finland mare Orozino (sister to Orofino, Moorland, and Doree), and is thus closely related to Desert Gold. He has a particularly well-balanced pedigree, for his sire, a grandson of Cyllene and inbred to that family, brings in St. Simon, Bend Or, and Musket blood, while his dam, who traces back to that successful mare Instep, adds infusions of the potent Wallace, Eichmond, and Stockwell blood.
