GIRL IN TROUBLE
UXDESIRABLE COMPANY
.After having been remanded for a week last Saturday, Kathleen Higgins, described as-a tailoresa, aged 19, again appeared before 'Mr. T. B. Jil'Ncil, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, charged with drunkenness, committing mischief by wilfully damaging a chair, and with being an idle and disorderly person.
Sub-Inspector Lopdell -aid that in-.j quiries. into the accused's history for the past- twelve months indicated that some very stringent reformative measures should be, adopted for her own good. If those measures could be applied without entering a conviction against her .-he would be very pleased. Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, who appeared for the girl, said that some time ago she had .got. into trouble, and after that she had let herself drift and had got into the habit of'taking liquor. She had also got. into undesirable company. After hearing counsel and Sub-In-spector Lopdoll, the Magistrate said that it,was largely as a,result of her associations, in-the past'that the girl was in her present position, and he did not think "it was advisable that she should remain in Wellington. He proposed to adopt the course suggested-by the Probation Officer, and order the defendant to come up for sentence on the mischief charge if called upon within two years. She is to go to the Salvation Army Home in Christehurch in the meantime, and remain there until suitable employment is found for her. The charge of being- idle and disorderly was adjourned for . three months. '
