EFFECT OF THE STORM
' EROSION AT MURITAI
Evidence of the roughness of .the sea during the recent bad weather is shown on the sea front 'at Muritai. For a considerable distance along the foreshore the sandhills have been undermined and several houses arc threatened. In a number of places the banks left by the under-cutting action of the waves are 20 or 30 feet high. One small house, the property of a wellknown Wellington resident, has its piles showing where formerly six or eight feet of sand were between them and the edge of the bank; any prospect of further bad weather is certainly not encouraging to the owner. Residents find it difficult to reach their homes owing to these banks and in some places ladders aro used. All along the beaches beyond Rona Bay is debris brought down by the Hutt River last Thursday, including many large logs and tree stumps. Many people have.found.this wood a great boon, and several cars were seen on Sunday afternoon taking a branch or two of firing' home; it is indeed a bad storm that does nobody any good.
