LAUNCH IN TROUBLE
STEERING GEAR FAILS
Three-men had an exciting experience on tho 30ft launch Wanderer when the steering gear failed pear Somes Island about 11 o'clock yesterday morning. The boat soon turned broadside on to the big seas, and in the few minutes that elapsed before a small tiller used in conjunction with the ordinary steering gear was brought into operation, the men—Messrs. C. J. Mac Gibbon (owner of tho launch), E. J. Insull, and F. G. Foukes—drifted dangerously near to tho island. The dinghy which was towing behind filled with water, and had to be cut away on account of the danger of its breaking the propeller. Even with tho tiller it was some time before the launch was able to get out of the trough of the waves. Then a course was sot for Petono wharf, and the boat was left moored off the beach while the occupants completed their trip to Lowry Bay by land. Mr. MacGibboft was informed this morning that the dinghy had been ! located down the harbour.
