M/Conkey, head lad to the stable, has. taken temporary charge of. the. team. Mty M'Coukey • ;•. has been associated with horses all his , .life. In his early life he -was attached . to the late Mr. E. C. Cutts's establishment at Eiecarton for eleven years, ■md after- ' wards was with Mr. Xv Kay for three ' years. Later, he set up as a.-trainer, on ■'. 'his own account at Ha wera,- and-was in charge of the late Mr. J. .'.Colyin's, M.P.; team for eighteen years. He joined up with the ]ate Mr. Daly as'head lad about nine months ago. . . • ■ Joins A. Goodman's stable at Trent- .•: ham. Last'season Valquette was possessed ;. j of plenty of pace; her,,. best ; : performance ...being a double success at the ...Bay' of'lslands Meeting. Since being bought,by her present owner (Mr. J. Avenell). she has failed to show any form, but she has riot i ; rim badly'in her recent starts at Garterion r and Levin, and may shortly show.'improye- '■ ment. ",.< The disappointing General Assembly, a ..four-year-old bay gelding by Paper-Money from the Boniform mare Lady Violet,. and thus half-brother to anotherr disappointing horse in Koyal Flower, has'been sold by .Mr. J.W. Murphy. to the Christchureh sportsman, Mr. P. Webb, and ■ >jas' sent South to his new home last evening. He will probably be found doing most of his /future racing around Christchureh and on .■■-.■'. the AVest Coast. . . .-...., . ■About Laughing Prince. ;, ;Providing he stands traiiiing-rhe 'was .^galloped on at.. .' Eiccarton—Laughing . ,o.Prince may. do some .more racing ;this ..season, but it is. probable, that he; will be retired to do' stud 'duty; next spring, according to advice received. That would . mean that his Eclipse Stakes record will not be added to. ' "
Te Awhina May Come Back. If Te Awhina continues to progress as she has been doing for the last few clays, the Riccarton trainer, E. Ellis, will make another effort to'-'train her,, as it is-ibe-lievcd her tendon trouble may be overcome. Karapoti's Brilliance. Iv a six furlong gallop at Te Awamutu last Thursday, Karapoti could not be held any slower while running five furlongs in lniin 13sec. Karapoti is reported to be looking a much-improved ,horse since his race at Te Rap;s and will be a worthy candidate for classic events ahead. Playground's Failure. Playground's run of consistent perfoimances came to an abrupt end at Levin on Saturday, and so dismal was his failure that few will want to be with him next time he steps out. The weight could hardly have troubled him, for he cariied 10.10 in a highweight handicap at Carterton, and never, made a complaint about it. The reversal of form was one o£ the most noticeable, in a day of many astonishing lapses. Limerick Sprints Again. Since he returned from Sydney last month, Limerick has been pottering along on the lead at Riccarlon, and he has freshened up wonderfully under this treatment. Having done so ■vyell, F. D. Jones decided to giv,e him a. couple of two furlong sprints last week, and he acquitted" himself with great cieclit. Limerick will now be an absentee'fiom the track, as Jones has arranged 'to spell him in the paddock for a couple of months, after which'he will resume work, r with' a view-to autumn racing.,. ■ May Go- to Auckland. Niglitmareh is not doing a great deal at .present. He'was thoroughly wound up for his-Riccarton engagements, and a short res^ .will do him no harm,' as there is nothing'more for him until the Christmas holiday "season arrives. Probably he will make'his n«xt appearance at the Auckland Meeting. He- will, of course, receive a, big weight in the Auckland Cup, but he is capaluVof handling it, and this is .a- race in which the top-weights frequently run well. . The King's Plate and the Clifford Plate, the two weight-for-age events, are almost certain, to attract him; and they will arouse «4 Jot of interest, especially if Cylinder tackles Mr. A. Louisson's crack again. Lucky Light's Retirement. Mr. W. T. Hazlett's Lucky Light, by Paper Money from Simper, has been retired to the stud, and she will be mated with Xight Raid. Lucky Light _ was a good galloper, buij she developed into an incorrigible outlaw at the barrier, • her mulish manners" making her retirement from the race track practically compulsory. She comes from a very successful family, and she may become a great brood mare, provided she does not pass on her bad manners. Cylinder's Half-sister. The ,fiye-year-old mare Glass Jug, who ran second to Cyrille in the Trial Stakes on the'first day*at Winton, but ran unplaced in the Benmore Handicap on the second day, is half-sister to the Derby and Stead Gold Cup winner, Cylinder, being by Paladin'from imported Cymene. She races in the livery of Mr. C. White, one of the veteran sportsmen of the south.' Paquito and Solvent. > .Paquito is being kept going in useful tasks, and looks in good order to tackle other engagements in the summer. The two-year-old Solvent is also in regular work, being none the worse for her.two hard "races at Riccarton. .So far their trainer, F, D. Jones, has not-made definite
arrangements for the holiday programme, but if his horses ro on all right it is probable that he will have a team for the Auckland Summer Meeting. Stud Dispersal. It is now decided that the Flaxmere Stud will be dispersed at Trentham on 19th January, on the eve of the Wellington Summer Meeting. The sale will bring a very fine collection of brood marcs into the market,..and some valuable young stock as well. Flaxmere sires have been kept in the foreground in Australia tins season by, the successes of Mcsvie Star in the Breeders' Plate-at Randwick. "and Hunt the Slipper in the Byron-. Moore Stakes at Flemington. Movie Star is by Lord Qucx and' Hunt the Slipper by Leighton. My Own, winner'of the Metropolitan Handi-cap'at-"the C.J.C. Meeting, and Grecian, winner .of two good races at the same fixture, are by Lord Quex. .-'■': A Usoful Pair. ■ • The Auckland owner,' Mr. C. M. Einanuel has two useful, gallopers in .Royal Tea and ■ Tetrachate/ to represent him at the" approaching meeting at .Takapuna. Both' these geldings-raced, prominently-at Whangarei and are reported to have gone on'Hhe right way since then. ; Royal Tea is1 standing;'up to, his work in good style, and if he returns to his best form again he'looks .certain ;tb win, more races. High Stud■; Fees; / .. -iEacirig' is. booniing in; America,' and ■stiidinasters are",iii the position that they can ask" exorbitant: fees for ..their, sires. The American . breeder, Colonel Ji. it. Bradley, has reduced, the fees of some ot his stallions, but he is asking £1000 for Black Tony's- services nest year. U\e fees will "be refunded if a mare should prove barren. ■; Black Tony is by Peter Pan from Belgravia, and will.be twenty years'1 of age next year.., : .
