MIXED WEATHER

SUNSHINE AND STORM

A BOISTEROUS WEEK-END

lii spite of the wind, the sunshine of yesterday morning and early afternoon "was very welcome after a boisterous week, but those who were tempted far out of doors had occasion for regret when, with, small warning, a southerly burst on Wellington in the late afternoon. About 4.30 o'clock the sky became black to the south, and it was not long before the bad weather rolled up, bringing with- it hail and heavy rain squalls. There was thunder also. ' To say the least, Wellington's weather was mixed over the week-end. During Saturday and most of Sunday the weather was at times threatening, but, on the whole, fair to fine, but with an unpleasant northerly wind. A slight anti-cyclone passed by to the north of New Zealand on Saturday, but brought only a moderate and temporary improvement with it. There was no cessation of. the strong westerly winds that have prevailed for some time. In the meantime, a rather vigorous depression developed off the New South, Wales coast. This depression moved rapidly eastwards during Saturday night, and by Sunday morning was crossing the Dominion. Bain was very widespread at 9 a.m., and some heavy falls were recorded. As the depression moved eastwards, , a rather , severe southerly change, accompanied by squalls, heavy showers, and in places hail and thunder, moved northwards over the Dominion. There were some heavy snow falls in the high country of the South'lsland, and about Wellington snow was visible this morning on the Bimutakas.? In the city, the southerly caused a drop of temperature of eleven degrees in ,one hour. This morning, south-west winds still blew, and there were scattered showers, but, on the whole, the weather had improved slightly. Beports' from the islands indicate that a tropical cyclone is located in the Fiji group. Auckland continued to experience boisterous and showery weather during the week-end, westerly winds backing to south-west yesterday. Christchurch had a, fine morning on Saturday, but the skies became clouded in the afternoon. On Sunday morning, a southerly set in about 10 o'clock, and was accompanied by some heavy showers and hail. Dunedin reported a «vet and boisterous week-end. The forecast is for strong south winds, still reaching gale force in. places. The weather is expected to improve in the west, but is still rather unsettled, and showers are likely at times in most districts, especially in eastern and northern areas, temperatures remaining cool.
