SUNDAY TRAINS,
. Mr. W. Hi Meld (Reform, Otald) aiked the Minister .of Railways.whether :it would not be possible to i-un Sunday ■ :trains during ■ the , summer months. of .people took advantage ofr these trains, and the announcement /by the Minister-that they wore to be cut out would cause great disappoint■ment and'inconvenience.- He asked that Sunday trains be run on the Hutt 'and Manawatu lines at Sunday- fares.;' ' The-Minister of Railways (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) said that unfortunately the thousands of travellers mentioned by Mr; Field had not materialised. The cutting out of the Sunday suburban services - did not mean that the longdistance- Sunday trains to Otaki and 'Palmerston North; would also be eliminated. ' Persons desiring to travel to the suburbs could use the trains running the longer distances at the ordinary fares or the zones fares, whichever were the cheaper. -. ■ ■ : ,Tho< Leader of the; Opposition (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coates) asked the Acting-Prime Minister whether a rei bate would'be made on petrol consumed / by motor vehicles used by local authorities for road making purposes. The Hon. E. A.-Ransom replied that those vehicles which were previously entitled to a refund, of 4d would now automatically be entitled to a refund of 6d a gallon. ,■ . ; The Leader of the Opposition (the Right Hon. J.G.: Coates) asked the Acting-Prime Minister whether the
Railway Commission would report to •the Government, and whether the report wonld be placed on the table of the House. ■-.-'■ ■ ! ' 'The Hon.'.E.Al Eausom replied that the report-had returned from His Excellehcyj .and had: been handed to the Government. He hoped to lay it on the table early next week. Mr. Speaker- ■ read further correspondence with Mr. S. J. M'Kee in respect to the Napier breach of privilege case".
The Acting-Prime Minister moved
that in yiew of the further explanation and expressions of regret contaiu'ed in Mr. M'Keo's letter no further action be taken against him. The motion was passed.
