THE UPPER HOUSE
A PAPER'S WARNING
THE UNEMPLOYMENT BILL
: (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day
: Commenting "editorially on the delay in reception the Unemployment Bill is likely to get in the Upper House the "Auckland Star" says:—
"To leave out of an elaborate organisation for dealing with unemployment all provision for maintaining men while-,they are out of work would be stupidity itself, but apparently there are: quite a number of Councillors prepared to approve it. Does it ever occur to them that these men and their families must live, and that if the sustenance clauses are expunged these people will still have to be maintained by the community? We hope that wisdom will prevail. The Council has no right either to emasculate or to throw out this Bill. The^ Government has a mandate to deal with unemployment. It is trying to carry out that mandate, and its proposals have been approved by the popular House. If the Council thwarts the intentions or! the Government it j will again write itself down as reactionary and make liberal-minded voters I determined to put an end to the system under which a nominated chamber can block progressive legislation."
