FINE AT LAST

BUT FOR ONE DAY ONLY

A slight anti-cyclone has passed over New Zealand , with its centra to the northward. : Pressure, however, has begun to fall in the south owing to ttib advance of a rather deep depression from the south-western portion of the Tasman Sea. Winds consequently have become northerly from Cook Strait southward, and at 9 a.m. to-day , a northerly gale was blowing at Puysegur Point. In the north of the North Island, however, southerlies are still prevailing. Rain fell yesterday and last night north of Auckland, and scattered showers have been reported from the East Coast between East Cape and Cape Palliser and in Foveaux Strait. The remainder of the Dominion has had fair to fine weather, and this morning conditions everywhere were fine.

Auckland's weather yesterday was unsettled, and heavy rain with a light southerly wind fell at night. A fresh southerly in Wellington brought cold and cloudy conditions, but no rain fell. A slight frost was recorded at Kelburn last night. Christehurch also had a light frost last night, the weather there improving during, the day as the southerly wind died down. A light northeasterly wind prevailed in Dunedin yesterday, where the weather was fine all day. : ;

To-day's forecast is for freshening northerly winds in and south of Cook Strait: elsewhere, southerly winds will later veer to the north. Tine and warmer weather' may be expected at first, but later on conditions will become unsettled again. The change will come from the westward, with rain settling in in those districts. The rain is likely to become general after about 36 hours.
