The number of • cases of infectious diseases in the Wellington district is at a very low level at present. The cases reported during the past week were as followb (the figures for t the previous week being given in parentheses) :— , "Wauganui-Horowhenua: Pneumonia, 1 (1); puerperal fever, 1 (1). Wairarapa-Hawkes Bay: Scarlet fever, d (3); diphtheria, 1 (0); tuberculosis, 1 (0); pneumonia, 3 (2); erysipelas, 1 (2). Central Wellington: Scarlet fever, 4 (5); diphtheria, 5 (10); tuberculosis, 2 (2); erysipelas, 1 (2); puerperal fever, 1 (1). Nelson-Marlborough: Pneumonia, 7 (5).
What is reputed to be the longest cable in the world covers a distance of 3600 milea from British Columbia to the Tanning Islands, under the Pacific Ocean. •
