HERE AND THERE

Southern Derby Hope. Gustavo, who won the Fairfield Handicap, one'mile, at Ashburton on Saturday, is a full brother to Count Cav'our, winner or both Derbies and the New Zealand Cup, and is "one of thq most promising Derby horses in the South Island this year. He is a better coloured chestnut than Count Cayour, »nd, if anything, is a more attractive mover on the track. He was not produced till last autumn, and at; his third and la&t start as a two-year-old he had a very easy end-to-end win in the Novice Slakes at Amberley. He-was not ready at the Grand National Meeting, but he ran two creditable races. On the first occasion ho was rushed to the front and did not see the distance out, but lon the second he, came from the back and. only , just failed to get into a place, The latter performance pleased his trainer (T. H. Gillett), who holds a high opinion of his possibilities and expects him to follow closer in the footsteps of his champion brother than The Viscount did. It is worth noting that The Viscount is a bay., but Gustavo has made a return to the chestnut that has brought most success to the family.

First of Crown Stars.

Taura Lad, who is working attractively for the Trentham trainer C. Pritchard at present, is probably the only one of Crown Star's get yet to race. His pedigree contains an interesting line on the distaff side as well, as he is from Lady Jewel, a daughter by AberbroUioek of Rangitiro's full sister, Kangihirie, and is thus a direct descendant of Vanguard and Natator. Crown Star himself is a wellbred horse, and he was very successful on the racecourse. When raced by the late Sir George Hunter ho won many of the principal handicaps in the Hawkes Bay, '"and, later in the colours of the Marlborough sportsman, Mr. J. Penglaso, he scored at Blenheim and Nelson Meetings. He was at his best over a middle distance, as his breeding, by Crown Imperial 11. from the Mahaki mare Tattle, a descendant through Whisper and Tell Tale of Traducer, would suggest. Being stationed' in Marlborough, it is unlikely that he will have much opportunity to make good as a sire, but in Taura Lad he has one who should not bo long in crediting him with a win. This gelding had three unplaced staits as a two-year-old last season, but ho has filled out since and promises to turn out a useful hack this season.

Other Members of Team.

The other mejnbera of C. Pritchard's team present in work are Invite and Doe both owned by Mr. W. H. Ballinger, The foirmei'is a two-year-old chestnut filly by Tea- Tray -from; the Varco mare Halina, dara of Lady^ HaJina,, Solferite, and Best Friend. :..:Sho' ran tin Successfully in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, but with the experience may do better in the M'Ledn:: .Stakes at Dunedin next month. Doe is :a year older full sister to Royal Game iantf'isVto compete in hurdle events this.season.- Raced on the flat as a three and four.year old, she showed no promise whateyerj. but. her trials over the fence's hay& indicated possibilities mr this direction. About Pohipeius,

, Pompdiiis is reported to be making useful progi; ess- at Te'Rapa, and he should bo iii fdrward, condition when seen out at the •Auckland Spring Meeting. Pompeius ran: second to High Pitch in the Jellicoe-Handicap last month. He is to be kept to :flat racing for the present, and on his latest form should pay his way.

En Route to New Zealand,

Advice , that the four-year-old chestnut stallion Defoe,'by Hurry On, from Daugh-ter-in-law, was shipped to New Zealand on 28th August has been received by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., from the British Bloodstock Agency, Ltd. The two-year-old half-sister to Defoe, Runaway Match, won the Prince of Wales Stakes, of- £2000, six furlongs, at Goodwood, on 31st July. Runaway Match is by Papyrus. Last .year the three-year-old sister to Defoe, Fair Diana, won the Champagne Stakes, Doncaster, beating Blenheim, who in Juno won the Derby. Defoe was the

first foal of his dam. He is by Hurry On and is described as being a horse very similar in type to hia, famous sire. Prior to shipment he. was measured in Kngland, aud his height was 16 hands 3% inches, and he measures over 9in below the knee.

A. B. Wllllams's Mares.

Cylinder's dam, Cymeue, who is in foal to Hunting Song, 'has gone to Chief Ruler this season, while Sweet Charity, who was sent to Australia last year on a visit to Gothic, has gone to Night Raid. The two-yonr-old filly by Limond from Sweet Charity his been mated with liunLing Song. These three marcs (owned by Mr. A, B. Williams) wera under the care of Mr. H. M. Reeves, and they will return to the Hororata Stud after mating.

Preparation Checkod. Eclair, the Rosendalc—Out Rock twoyear old purchased in Sydney last autumn by the Christchurch eporlsmau, Mr. V: Williamson, contracted a cold some time ago and he was given a spell at his owner's property. He has made a good recovery; and is back •in ,T. H. Gillett's stable at Riccarton, but he may not bo ready to race until the season is well advanced. Related to Autopay.

Mr.. Williamson's marc Toti Dal Monte, by Gay Lad from imported Trcbclli 11., the dam of the speedy sprinter Autopay, has foaled a bay colt to Silverado. This is her second: foal, the .first, now a yearling, being a Robespierre colt of considerable, promise.

Successes at Perth.

At the Goodwood Racing Club's Meeting at Perth "recently, New Zealand-bred horses were in the picture. The Goodwood Plate, six furlongs, was won by Autobiography (Sutala— Egotism), and the Goodwood Purse, seven furlongs, by Lilt (LucuUuß— Lisp). Constellation (Day Comet—Tangiwai) ran third in the Hurdle Race, two miles, and Autumlad (Autumn —Te Puia) third in, the Final Handicap, seven furlongs. Mervette Working Well.

Mervettc, the year older half-.sislcr by Lucullus to Historic, is reported to be coming along towards racing shape again at Te Rapa,.and.is showing the benefit of the fast galloping she has been given lately. Last season she was not raced extensively, but she 'notched four wins for £1220 in slakes.

Star Comet for Auckland.

Star Comet, who has not raced since he won a double over hurdles at Ellerslie at Easter, is to make his nest appearance at the Auckland Meeting next month. He has schooled freely in what limited work he has had lately, and his track gallops show that the breathing trouble that developed'suddenly and caused him to forego Great Northern engagements has now disappeared.

Spell Nearly Over. Ah Wera is still being 6pelled at To Aroha, but may not be long before he is reconimissioned. , The deeds o£ his full brother, Taumai, at the last Great Northern Meeting, naturally impels his owner to give him a chance of makiug a name for himself. His galloping and jumping capabilities have already been amply proved. In this connection it is interesting to note that the dam of the pair, an unnamed mare by Foremost, lias recently been sold by her owner to Mr. L. Walker, of Te Aroha.

Leader Goes to Stud.

Leader, the four-year-old.horse by Chief Ruler froni the Multiform mare Formless (dam also o£ Melee, Lava, and Credit), has been sent-by his owner (Mr. I<V Williamson) to dp stiid duty this season, and two of the maies who will visit him are Mr. J/S. Barrett's pair,: Dame Straightlace, by Kilbrpney from Discipline, and her daughter, Corsetiere, by ; Solferino. Leader:■ showed-, a lot of speed last spring, but it was; deemed advisable to retire him early in.ihe autumn.' ~. He may resume training after a ■ light' stud season. ~

Valuation as Hurdler,

Valuation was given a lesson over the pony hurdles at Te Hjp.i one morning last week. While ho did not display much eagerness for the job, improvement can be expected, as it was his first "effort. Another to be seen out in the same capa.city.atTe.jfclKalast.wcek was Gay Duke. This 'four-year-old gelding/ by Lord'Quex —Salvette, has been disappointing in what flat racing ho hns undertaken, and it may be> thai a-change of duly will alter the luck.

Te Aroha Club's Loss

' The Te Aroha Jockey Club suffered a severe loss last week by the death of its secretary, Mr. Arthur Bush. During his term of office,' Mr. Bush proved to be a most capable'oflicor. He had the confidence of trainers and owners, and in ■ various ways showed initiative that materially assisted in the welfare of the club. Well-informed in' racing matters, and with a high degree of capability in the general running of the club's affairs, he was an undoubted asset to the popular institution.

To Visit Night Raid. Some time ago ( the Australian mare VaJicare, a "brilliant galloper by Valais, was sent to winter at Mi1. H. M. Reeves's Hororata stud prior to being mated with a New Zealand sire. A story was in circulation' recently that the marc was not in foal, but • this has proved incorrect, as she- has produced another filly to Magpie., Her Magpie filly, now a yearling, *\vhb accompanied her dum from Australia, was a weakling when she arrived, but she has done very well lately and promises to assume handsome proportions. The other. Australian.mares who wintered at Hororata, Valeni (by Valais from the imported Spronella, by Spion Kop) and the Victoria Oaks winner, Redshank (by Thrice from Red Streak), along with Valicare, have gone on n visit to Night Raid.

Odds and Ends.

Mr. J. Gleeson, of Bull Block, New Plymouth, reports that Cruboen (Limond —Moleen Oge) has foaled su chestnut filly to Potoa, and Molleen Ogo (Birkenhead— Kathleen Mavourneeu) has foaled a bay filly to the same eirc. The former is a half-sister to Cottesmore (by Hunting Song), a two-year-old who is working aHractively at Trentham at pres'orit. ■ Pago Boy is again working on the tracks at To Rapa. The former southerner was quite useful during his career in the province last season.

R. S. Bagby's association with J. T. Jamieson's stable has now ended, and Bagby will return to Auckland nest month. E. Bartle has been engaged to ride for the stable during the remainder of the Australian trip when the weights suit.

A To Aroha report states that Sir Russell has made a splendid recovery from his recent throat operation and will resume track work when his trainer (J. H. Wallace) returns from Avondalc.
