AMATEUR PRELIMINARIES.

' All the amateur bouts were to have been the preliminary rounds of the championship, but owing to withdrawals on. account' of indisposition, only two championship bouts were decided.

Lightweight (Limit lOat). B. J. Burton (Ost 3lb) and J. Crecke (9st 21b) wrestled hard for two rounds without either gaining a decided advantage. In the third round Burton gamed a fall with an arm bar. Heavyweight (over 12st 71b). The wrestling of W. Thornton (13fet) and A. Rush (12st 131b) in the first round of the heavyweight championship was hard but not very .spectacular. Thornton was the stronger," and, although Rush, showing more science, got the holds, he did not have the strqngth to complete them. Ine referee gave it a draw. Other Contests. W. Woolhouse (9st 51b) was inclined to turn hia bout with R. Sutherland (list) into something of a marathon, and Suther land had some difficulty m getting to his man. Their efforts provided the crowd, with some amusement. There was loud applause when the lighter boy twice kicked himself out of headlocks. Both men ran hard at the opening of the last round-Sutherland forward, Woolhouse backwards.' :' At length they got to the mat, where Sutherland looked certain to obtain a fall with a body press, but Woolhouse wriggled over the blue line. Sutherland tried hard but he could not pin his man, and the bout was declared a C. Low (list 61b) and H. Chowan (lOst 91b) wasted no time in getting to work, and they spun and dumped one .another with the utmost impartiality. The pair showed a good knowledge of the game, and they brought into play a variety of holds, including the Boston crab, a straight arm scissors and body scissors. Low won with two falls secured in the second and third rounds. It was a fast and clever exhibition. Tom Kay refereed the amateur bout and ■Mr. J. Creeke the professional contest.
