STOWDfG AWAY ON SHIPS
Another case of a man. stowing away on an intercolonial-steamer for the trip across the Tasman was" heard in the Magistrate's Conrt : to-day. . Frank Clisby, aged 27, was landed by the Maunganui at Wellington to-day, and later in the Court he admitted .having stowed away on the ship. Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that Clisby originally belonged to New Zealawfl. He stowed away at Auckland.and on arrival in Sydney was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. After being released from prison, Clisby was unable to. find work, and stowed away on the Maunganui for the trip to Wellington. . The .mate of the Maunganui, said the . sub-inspector, :wished ; . him ■ .to stress that cases of stowing away were becoming, general. Often the stowaways were exposed to considerablo danger, and caused anxiety to th& officers, (in one instance a. man stowed away in a position. in which 1 his life was endangered; he was nearly burnt to death. Clisby handed the Magistrate (Mr E. Page) a written statement..
He, was fined £2, and was ordered to pay the fare from Sydney, £ 7 10s, in default one month's imprisonment.
