HISTORIC HOSTELRY

"GOLDEN CROSS" TO BE

DEMOLISHED

(Received 22nd September, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, 21st September.

The .relentless change sweeping over London reached one of the most famous spots In old London when the Golden Cross Hotel, adjoining Trafalgar Square, closed its doors for the last time at the week-end. Three hundred years of London history is associated with the Golden Cross. It was the Golden Cross to which David Copperfield came from Canterbury, and it was there where Dickens represented Pickwick's encounter with a cabman. It was also the hostelry from which Pickwick drove the Commodoro coach to Rochester.

The hotel, together with a great Mock of adjoining buildings, including South Africa House, one of the few remaining landmarks, is now being demolished.
