Furious gales, all day long made the Channel impassable except 'for tho strongest and largest steamers. At least a dozen big steamers, including the Templemead and Caithness, were sending out signals of distress, besides others in the Atlantic. A French, schooner was swept on the rocks.
The liner Rotorua, from New Zealand, arrived at Southampton eight hours late.
A tug which put out to assist tho Italian steamer Tuseania returned leaking, with her f bridgo washed away and the flag halfmast for a sailor who had been sw-opt overboard.
At Folkestone crowds watched a nmlti-engined air liner, battling against an 83-mile gale, brought almost to a standstill in mid-ain
The seas at Portland washed over the retaining wall and swept into the town, breaking into a cinema and wotting the audience.
