GOOD FINISHES

m AVONDALE ON SATURDAY

SOME SURPRISES

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post")

AUCKLAND, 20th September.

Good finishes were a feature of the racing at the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting to-day, and in most instances the margins.between the placed horses were small. The results were not favourable to backers. King Colossus and Catoma being the only favourites to win, while three winners,- in Valroe, Awarere, and Envoy, were all at good prices. Horses carrying JTp. 10 saddlecloth did the "hat trick" by winning the first three races, and then another No. 10 in Envoy completed the day by winning the last race. The sum 01 s£l invested on No. 10 in each would have shown a profit for the day of nearly £30. The attendance was up to the average, but the totalisator return showed the prevailing tendency; the turnover of £37,656 ■was £9141 less than on the corresponding day last year. MAIDEN PLATE. ■ Twenty-four started in the Maiden Plate, and Chrysology was made a slightly better favourite than Rosshire, who was about twice as well backed as the third choice, Jaeldy Karo. Escalus was smartest to begin, but was quickly joined by Vanessa, and. they led into the straight from Illuminagh, Arch Eagle, Chrysology, Karangnpaj, Miss Albyn, and Jaeldy Karo. Near the distance Jaeldy Karo assumed command, and he stalled oil a strong challenge from Rosshire to win by a short head. Arch Eagle was a neck away third, and Bea\i Irish right up fourth. Next to finish were Illuminagh, Land Measure, and Great Emblem. , The winner registered a nice performance, but he was a shade lucky to beat Hosshire, who came very wide in the straight. Arch Eagle, Beau Irish, and llllnminagh ran good races, but Chrysology stopped badly after being well up at the turn. Karangapai and Stonehenge, who ■were badl/ drawn at the. post, made creditable showings, and may soon do bettor. KINGSLAND HURDLES. . " The' Te' Awamutu representative, Air King, made a successful debut as a hurdler in.'.tne Kingsland Hurdles, which he won very -comfortably. Make Up was favourita over Carlaris, with the winner a wellbdcked fourth choice. Air. King, Daylight, jA. "Rtiitzer were prominent early, Waltzer going to the front along the back from JUylight. . Near the half-mile , Daylight took "charge to lead round the bend from Air King, Royal Day, and Carlaris. Air King! "was'_.first over the last fence, and went on-to score by two lengths from Daylight, who defeated Royal Day by a length and a half..; Carlaris was fourth, followed by Royal-Visitor. Red Comet, Quincoma, and King Swift all fell. . Air King's performance was a pleasing one, and he .is going to be very useful as a jumper*. Carlaris was not well ridden, and' should have been closer, while Royal Day.shaped well for a horse who is not yet seasoned. Make Up blundered at the first fence, where he just avoided the fallen King Swift, and was never afterwards in the picture. CHAMPION HACK PLATE. An outsider in Valroe created a surprise iii. the Champion Hack Plate, in which the favourite Courtesy was unplaced. Imsu-

teagirl, Johneen, and Valroe began quickest, Valroe going on in the lead with Biddy's Boy, Sir Kay, and Cruachan in close attendance. Biddy's Boy, Sir Kay, and Waimuri ran past Valroe at the halfmile post, where The Sun moved up smartly. Biddy's Boy, Sir Kay, and Cruachan were the leaders at the turn from The Sun, Valroe, and Imateagirl. Below the distance Biddy's Boy was just clear, but Valroe finished strongly to beat him by a head. Te Hoia was a length and a half back third, and Sir Kay fourth. Next came Cruachan, Waimuri, and Royal Finance.

Valroo finished, ivith plenty oi determination, and Te Hoia also came home well from a long way back. Biddy's Boy just failed in the last few strides after making nearly all the • running. A winning turn for this novice should not be - long delayed. Courtesy was slow to begin, and then received a poor run. Sir Kay displayed plenty of speed and is likely to be an early winner. FLYING STAKES. Backers were astray when they gave most euj port to Lucy Rose, Nancy Lee, and An aken in the Flying Stakeß, as they we c all; unplaced, and it was left to Awarere, who was only moderately supported, to; win- from an outsider' in Supremacy. Awarere and Imamint were quickly in front, Imamint leading into the straight from Awamutu, Awarere, Awaken, Nancy Lee, and White Wings. Awarere headed Imamint nearly a furlong from the. post, and just got. home

by a head from Supremacy, who beat Imamint by a neck. Lucy Rose was fourth, followed by Flying Prince and White Wings.

Awarere usually, races well on this course, and on this occasion he responded gamely to the vigorous handling of Goldfinch. Supremacy's effort was a surprising one, as he had not raced for about eighteen months. With 21b overweight and an unfashionable horseman in the saddle, he was unfancied, and returned a nice price. Better handled at the finish, he would probably have won. Imamint ran a fine race", and was so close to Awarere that it was difficult to see how the judge could -place Supremacy between them. - Lucy Rose was in all sorts of trouble -after beginning well, and was sent baqk nearly last after going two furlongs. She received another check when finishing fast in the straight, and was unlucky not to Yin. SWANSON HANDICAP. Only Catoma and Principal were backed with any confidence in the Swanson Handicap, arid they justified the judgment of backers byl running first and second respectively. Sulla went through the tapes as the field linetl up, and his rider, O. M'lnally, was .thrown heavily, being too shaken to remount,; and Sulla took no part in the race. Catoma moved first, but was' steadied, and Tradesman ran to the front along the back from Principal, Neil, Indolent, and: Biddy Comet. Tradesman and Biddy Comet-were the leaders rounding thel bend from Principal and Catoma, with Neil aild Glaremore also handy over the last furlong. Catoma, Principal, and Clareniore fptigh^-it out, Catoma winning from Principal by head, with Claremore half a head- a,\yay,' third. Biddy Comet was fourth," followed.' by The Sun and Tradesman.: Thepjaced horses were well clear of the others. Catoma had : t6V."behard ridden to win, but he,was.doing bfeston the post. Principal and ;Qareffibre. registered good efforts, arid^TMSSflnywhb was having his second start; f(jijythe;,day, came from a long way back. Tlie Sun drew the outside at the barrier, a decided disadvantage at the mile post, where the ■ inside horses have all the best of it. HENDERSON HANDICAP. Another surprise was forthcoming in the Henderson Handicap when the mode-rately-fancied Envoy scored in good style from Grand Tea, who cut the favourite, Te Atiawa, out of second place in the last stride! Te Atiawa and Ohinemuri were prominent in the early running, Te Atiawa and Lady Court leading into the straight from Envoy, Branson, Grand Tea, and Prince of Orange. Envoy headed Te Atiawa at the distance, and came on to score by half a length from Grand Tea, who beat Te Atiawa by a head. Prince of Orange, was another head away fourth. Envoy was always handy, and finished stoutly, as;did Grand Tea and Prince of Orange. Te Atiawa battled on very gamely after making all the running. Prince of Orange should be an improved horse for the race; and may be better suited at a mile. He was going very fast on the post, and might have won in another few strides. ■ JSesults:— v . . .
