POTTED GOAL TO PENALTY

Manawhenua defeated Hawkes Bay by 4 points to 3, a potted goal to a penalty goal, securing their first win of the season and their first defeat of Hawkes Bay. The latter team played below tueir true form. Hawkes Bay had the advantage of the wind in the first spell, but, although often dangerous, never managed to finish oft' their movements, owing sometimes to sound defence on the part of the home team and sometimes to weakness in their own combination. Once Amadio saved a score by a force down. Crooks was once almost; across, Bt'amweU tackling him a foot from the line, and Page securing and finding the touch line. Grenside went into the position of first five-eighth, and soon matters looked dangerous, but Henderson was held up. The home side continued to defend well, and half-time arrived without score.
Early., in the second spell a movement among the Manawhenua backs broke down. The ball went back to Griffin, who potted a fine goal. Later, following an infringement. ih a scrum, Grensidc landed a penalty for Hawkes Bay. The niatch, which wan controlled by Mr. F. S. Hewitt, ended without further score.
