MAGISTRATE'S COURT
This morning's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. T. B. M'Neil, S.M. .
Giovanni Calvani, fisherman, aged 43, a. second offender for drunkenness, who had been in custody over the week-end, was convicted and discharged.
One first offender for drunkenness was also convicted and discharged. , On a charge of fighting in a public place, George Keenan, labourer, aged 36, was fined £2. Frank Pepper, labourer, aged 31, who was jointly charged with Keenan, was discharged. The Magistrate said that in his opinion Keenan was the aggressor.
William John Wade, labourer, aged 53, was convicted and ordered to take out a prohibition order against himself for his fifth offence of drunkenness in the last six months. Wade said that he had the offer of a position, and would be going away on Wednesday. After convicting Wade, the Magistrate said he would let the case stand over' until Saturday morning to see if he went away or not.
For his third offence of drunkenness, Joseph Daley, fireman, aged 29, was convicted and fined 30s, in default seven days' imprisonment.
Described by Sergeant Butler as being a very unfortunate sort of a man, George Lucas, ship's cook, aged 48, was ordered to be detained at Rotoroa Island for a period of twelve months, on a charge o£ being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient lawful means of support.
William Cos, a second offender for drunkenness, was fined 10s, and another second offender, James Howard, who did not appear, was fined £1 by Mr. W. H. Coy, J.P., at tho Mount Cook Police Court this morning.
