TIGHTENING UP HEAD

Many car owners who know enough to avoid drawing the cylinder head bolts down too much at any one place, when putting back the head, ;,pcin to forget that the rule also applies to giving the head bolts a secondary tightening after the engine haß been warmed up. It isn 't unusual for gasket leakage to follow such oversight.

One owner was very careful about replacing the head after cleaning out the carbon. He did not happen to know the exact order in which the head bolts should bo tightened down but he did the next best tiling by skipping around a bit. Satisfied that he had done a good job, he took a ride to get the engine well heated up. Then he got into trouble.

When giving the bolts a final tightening he drew down all those on ono side before starting on the opposite side. The excess pressure on the one side was just enough to start a leak.
