CONJURER'S SUCCESS

FIELD HE ACCOUNTED FOR

ONLY MODERATES

"NTo one 'likes a jumper more than. Mr. C.~Boyle, o£ Wellington. Some years ago lie took Carawock to Sydney and was robbed o£ a good stake by sheer bad luck, ths/horse nearly, coming down at the last fence in a steeplechase when appearing to have the race in his keeping. A year ago last April he commissioned an old friend now resident in Victoria, to buy him a horse who would be likely to wm_good hurdle races. When Mr. T. M. Burke submitted a number of horses for sale^in Melbourne, Mr. Boyle's friend went to mo guineas to secure Conjurer, who gave promise of developing .into a fivstclass hurdler. He was injured in a, raete at vaul£eld shortly after the sale, and was-sub-sequently sent to New Zealand, where it was expected that the conditions wouJd assist in building him up. _ ■Now back in Victoria, Conjurer, (who is known here as Conjurer II.) won his first race in his present colours at the Sandown Park Meeting a week ago last Wednesday, when he easily defeated a moderate hurdle field. His party benefited considerably by the win, as he opened at 10 to 1, and closed second favourite to Komeo at sto 1. Conjurer was always handily placed in the race, and after Suttori Grange and King Motang had led him to the bottom of the straight he ran easily to the front and past the post 2^ lengths ahead of Sutton Grange. The success is hardly sufficient to rank Conjurer as likely to take a place among the stars of the game, but there is reason to believe that his connections anticipate that he.will make good in the best company before long. Meanwhile his chief distinction must be that he is a fullbrother to Poitrel, who won a Melbourne Cup with 10.0 on his back. The breeding is. St. Alwyne (sire of numerous good stayers), from the Metal marc Poinard.
