FRENCH CONVERSATIONS.
"Brush Up Your French," is a series of conversations for ordinary "so taken from the "Daily Mail." They have boon compiled by Mr. W. G. Hartog, M..A. (London), senior French master of St. Paul's School. There are somo seventy-five conversations, mostly between "a mythical M. and Mine. Bupont, but occasionally introducing Customs officers, railway porters,, hotel servants, and shopkeepers. Useful vocabularies and notes on the use of "thou" and "you," on etiquette, the metric system, and French money will be found as appendices. Unfortunately nothing is said about that indispensable subject pronunciation, which so often proves a stumbling block to many English travellers in France. However, the French are usually patient with foreigners, helping them over verbal obstacles. The conversations are often lightly touched with humour, and every one of them is helpful to either sex or both of them, according to circumstances. The conversations arc translated with English on the opposite pages, and thumb-runl sketches arc "cut into" the text. "Brush Up Your French" is published by J. M. .Dent and Sons, Ltd., London. Twenty-five of the conversations have been .recorded for the gramophone. I
