GAY MASQUERADE
AMATEUR AETS SOCIETY
The masked fancy dress ball held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall by the Amateur Arts Society last evening was an undoubted success. The hall was crowded, and the gaily coloured electric light bulbs and streamers, together with the many ana varied fancy costumes of the dancers, made a very attractive seene1. The walls were panelled with posters (the work of the Art Section), depicting some clever and amusing interpretations of terpsichore. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Douglas Taylor (who wore pale green taffeta), Mrs. Dawn (black and silver lace), and Mrs. Ellis (lace over mauve georgette). An amusing item, was given by a ballet of "Wooglies," in black costumes, . with giant rat-like heads. They were Misses A. Tunks, A. Robertson, W. Male, B. Phear, Q. HallM'Lean, M. Ellis, and M. Todd. A demonstration of ballroom dancing was j given by Miss Betty Graham and Mr. T. R. M'Gregor, and a step dance by I Miss Muriel Wilton. The organisers of the dance were Mrs." Hall-M'Lean (wearing a pink beaded frock), Mrs. J. Christopher (artist), Misses N. Messenger (Amateur Arts Society), E. Staveley (Black Girl), G. Mantell (Hawaiian), T. Skinner (Elizabethan), Messrs. M. Tovey, L. Bcckord (Sheik), C. Thompson, R. Welch, C. Courtcnay, D. Alien, Milne, J. llolmwood, and D. G. Misifarlanc (secretary). The costumes woic judged by Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Dawn, who awarded the prizes to Miss .Jessica Andrae (Indian Ranee) and Mr. John llolmwood (The Red Shadow). Among others present were: Mrs. Fowler, Mrs. Bligh (Chinaman), Mrs. G. CressAvoll (grandmother), Mrs. R. P. Adams (Chinese Princess), Misses A. Tunks (Lido Lady), Magaret Gibb (Indian Rajah), Elizabeth Hadfield (Shepherdess), Marjorie Gray (black and write Period frock), M. Brown (Gipsy), A. Skinner (Mexican), M. Brown, _ A. Page, J. Tomkies (Balloon Girl), M Freeman (Period frock), E. Kimball (blue taffetas), T. Hargreaves (Victorian), M. Hargreaves (Spanish Lady), M. Todd (Peter Pan), Johnston, E. Lawson (pink lace), B.
