AVONDALE MEETING
SATURDAY'S CARD A SOFT COU^Slj; (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evoning Post.") . :,. . AUCKLAND, ISth September.
The weather here has been very threatening for several days, and tho outlook f for the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting is not altogether promising at present. The course is 6,oft, and wlu'le it will not be extremely heavy unless further rain falls,- it may be sufficiently holding ;to prejudice the chances of many of. the candidates. . Most of the visiting horses were on the tracks this morning, when the ar- - rivals included the Cup favourite,: Seatown, . Mendip, and Awaken. Mr. T. H. Lowry's horses Chrysology, Commandant, Courtesy, and Great Charter, who were reported to be coming from Napier by motor float, had not arrived at 6 o'clock this evening, but it -was expected that they would arrive later. . ...:.• The first problem backers will hare to solve is the MAIDEN PLATE; seven furlongs. st lb '■'■'.■ st lb liominican ~. It is not usually a good race for the topweights, few of ■whom have succeeded in winning. However, Historic, Star Stranger, and Prodice are all good, and they must be seriously considered. The state of the track will be against Star Stranger, and as Prodice has not had a race since January, ■ Historic looks < the best of the three. However, Prodice is more forward than 'generally i believed, and even if she does not win she should at least make a good showing. Seatown is the pick of the handicap, and he looks so well that he seems certain to give his army of admirers a great run., There are many others with chances, but the best of the others may be Paddon, Mendip, High Pitch, Maori Boy, and Standfast. . The favourites may be Seatown, Maori Boy, and Historic.
