MEN ON RELIEF WORKS
During the '.'interjection stage" of the meeting called by the Mayor, llr. G. A. Troup, in the Council Chamber on Tuesday evening some of those at tho back of the chamber, expressed doubts as to the accuracy of figures quoted showing the number of men engaged on city relief.
The answer to such suggestions is given in the following return cheeked as to 10th September:—
Parks and Reserves Department.— ■Nairnville Park, 40 (21 being paid out of Returned Soldiers' Association fund); Brooklyn district, 5; tree-plant-ing on Town Belt, 21; now golf links, 17; Mount Victoria (gorse, grubbing, etc.), 20; total 103.
City Engineer's Department.—Sydney street, 4; jCHenmore street, 1; Eastern approach fan-house (tunnel), 7; Patterson street fan-house, 12; Crescent (Eoseneath), 2; Buckle street widening, 16; Melrose, 13; Wexford street, .17; Friend street, 1; Carlyle street, 5; Apuka street, 20 j retaining wall, Hanson street, 4; Awa road, 2; Darlington road, 33; Campbell street, 14; Bunvood street, 16; Kelburn parade, 22; Mortimer terrace, 29; Ganges road, 13; Cecil road, 21; Ngaio Gorge foad, 19; sandhill levelling, 47; Karori Cemetery, 7; total, 325.
The grand total is 428.
