TO SEE ECLIPSE
PARTY READY TO LEAVE
With the departure, next Tuesday from. Auckland of the Niagara there will leave New Zealand the astronomical expedition which is to observe the total eclipse of the sun on 22nd October. This expedition is the official one of the British Empire, and will go to Xiuafo.u, or Tin Can. Island, the best xpot in the. Pacific from which 'to' observe the phenomenon. Dr. C. E. Adams, Government Astronomer and leader of the imrty, Mr. W. K. de Montalk, and Mr. P. \V. Glover will leave Wellington for Auckland on Saturday. The other members of the party, who will join them in" Auckland, "are Dr. W. C. Burns, Mr. F. Gawith, Mr. C. B. Miehio, and Mr. P. L. Overton. There have been other applications from those desirous of joining the expedition, but funds and circumstances do not allow of a larger party. The possibility of the expedition going at all has been due to the generosity of the pttblie in .providing the requisite £300,.t0 which Sum has been added a Government subsidy of £200. Monetary donations will bo publicly acknowledged later, but the expedition committee wishes to acknowledge gifts in kind and facilities provided by the following, in addition to those already acknowledged: ' Flueuzol Proprietary, Ltd.; Nestlo and Anglo-Swiss. Condensed Milk Co..(Aust.), Ltd.; Dominion Dental Supplies- Co.; ■ Kempt-homo, Prosser, and Co.; B. M.. Griffiths -and Co.; Southern Cross Assurance Co., Ltd.; Golden Bay Cement Co.; Wellington Harbour Board; Auckland Harbour Board; Defence Department; Union Steam Ship Co.; Kailway Department; Bank of New Zealand;.lnnes and MacGregor, Ltd.; Watorworth's, Ltd; Picot Bros.; Sharland arid Co., and J. E. Evans, Ltd. -A large number, of firms and organisations' havo been only • too. ready to help the expedition in every way possible, and this has facilitated the' task of preparation and eqnipment. Whilst the eclipse will be a total one at Niuafou, in New Zealand it will be visible only as a partial eclipse, and should be seeii, if the weather is clear, from all parts of the Dominion. In Wellington the eclipse will begin at 5.33. a.m. (Summer Time) on 22nd October, when, the, mp.qn..w.ill inako a contact '.wi.th. the lower left-hand side.'of the snii-?s disc.... At .9.31 ;a.m-., practically an hour.later,/the middle period of the eclipse -will' be "reached. ■" At that momeirt a trifle, over.four.-tetiths of.the sun's surface will be obscured, enough to cause perceptible diminution of.daylight. The eclipse will finish at .10.33 a.in., exactly two hours after its. com-
mencement.
