AVONDALE PROSPECTS

HEAVY GOING LIKELY

THE FIELDS REVIEWED

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "Tht evenlno Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day. As the opening day approaches interest in the Avoudale Jockey Club's ispriug Meeting is quickening, and thu arrival ot many visiting candidates in the past lew days will cause considerable attention to bo focused on training operations at Avondale and . Ellerslie to-day, when most of the horses engaged at the meeting will have their final gallops. Except lor reports that Prince of Orange and Panther arc likely to forego their engagements and be reserved for the Henderson Handicap, for which . they are also acceptors, yesterday brought forth no iresli developments. 11l connection with the Avondale Cup there is still a strong disposition to favour Seatown"s chance,-and last year's winner Historic, is also well fancied. Others whose prospects are not being overlooked are Alendip, Paddon, High Pitch, and Maori iioy, and these mudlarks are steadily gaining adherents now that a heavy track Kecnis assured.

As far as the Flying Stakes Handicap is concerned the tendency is to favour Lucy i<ose, Nancy Lee, and Awaken, and there are indications that Lucy Kose may be the actual favourite on the day. This mare is decidedly partial to heavy going, alicl with every likelihood of conditions being right into her hands she must be extremely difficult to beat. When it is considered that she was slow to begin and badly placed to the turn, Lucy Roses second to Chromadyne at the Pakuranga Meeting was a meritorious effort, and one that left the impression that sh would be an early winner. Nancy Lee is also in her element in soft ground, and she, too, can be depended upon to make a solid showing. Easily the largest team from any stable to be represented at the meeting will be that of F E. Loomb, who will have no fewer than twelve representatives, comprising Desert Glow, Prodice, Illuminagh, Uluminelli, Air King, Awamutu, Kingsway, Baroscope, Princess Bede, Biddy Comet, Biddy's Boy, and Flying Prince. Loomb's candidates reached Avondale this morning, and all appear to be in good order. Other arrivals yesterday were the Awa-puni-trained two-year-olds Teller and King Colossus, who are to contest the Avondale Stakes Teller will be located at Ellerslie, and King Colossus will have his quarters at Avondale. At Takanini yesterday Royal Artist (Walters) and Roseric (Goldfinch), who will be bracketed in the Avondale Stakes, were sent half a mile. They kept together all the way, to run home very smartly in 51 l-ssec, a nice gallop. They were timed from the five furlong to the furlong post. Both went pleasingly, with little between them, but Royal Artist left the impression that he would have prevailed at the c- dof another furlong. H. Goldfinch rides Ttoseric in the Avondale Stakes, and E. Ludlow will have the mount on Royal * Rosshire (Goldfinch) and Prince of Orange (Walters) were given a solid gallc over seven furlongs. Prince of Orange had a slight advantage over the first furlong, but at the end of three furlongs he seemed to lose ground, and Rosshire went on to beat him soundly by two lengths, in Imin 36sec. Goldfinch kicked Rosshire near the finislunpr post, and he responded in fine style. His gallop was a good one, and showed that he is on the up-grade. Prince of Orange did not seem to handle the ground as well as the three-yeai'-old, and at one stage of the gallop he lost ground quickly.
