HERE AND THERE

Back from Australia.

The Ellerslie trainer J. Williamson returned to Auckland on' Tuesday after a visit to Australia. With him was Mrs. Williamson. They were married in Australia recently, and Mrs. Williamson is making her first visit to New Zealand. Mr. Williamson brought back ftaiihglit. Two days before he sailed for Auckland he sold Tremetus to a Sydney buyer. Rafflight started to grow on his arrival in Sydney, and at the end of two months had increased in height by half a hand. F. M'Govern Returns. The New Zealand jockey F. M'Govern arrived back in Auckland from Sydney on Tuesday. He has returned only on holiday in order, to recuperate from an attack of malaria, which he contracted after a visit to the Dominion for the last Great Northern Meeting. M'Govern went to Ceylon some time ago> under engagement to one of the bestrknown racing men in that colony, Mr. W. Coomber, and.he intends to go back there shortly, as he firtnlv established b'niseH '-n his last trip. Glare Again Working. Glare, who was sold by the Trentham trainer J. W. Lowe to Mr. J. Truskett, of Melbourne, after the last Wellington Autumn Meeting, but who has not done too well since being taken up at Caulfield, reappeared on the track last week heavily bandaged on both forelegs. He appeared to be quite free in his action when galloped, and although he has been relieved of his JRandwick engagements, he may yet prove to be a formidable opponent in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Those who knew him at his best last autumn are firmly convinced that he will extend even Phar Lap if he can be produced fit and well on the day. This is no idle talk, for there is little doubt that he shares with Waterline the distinction of being most promising of Dominionowned horses sold into Australia this year. Masterton Programme. An attractive programme has been issued by the Masterton Racing Club for its Spring Meeting at Opaki on 18th October. The principal race is the Masterton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, for which the stake is £22">. The remainder of the £1015 offered. is distributed as follows:—Nursery ■ Handicap, .'our furlongs, £100; Maiden Stakes, six furlongs, £100; High-weight Handicap, one mile, £120;; Lansdowne Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, £110; Lawn Hack Handicap, one mile, £120; Grandstand Handicap, seven furlongs, £130; and Electric Hack Handicap, five furlongs and a half, £110. Nominations for all events close on Monday, 6th October, at 0 p.m. Pegaway Preparing. The Easter Handicap winner, Pegaway, is reported to be. getting through plenty of useful work at Te Awamutu, and he is steadily hardening up in condition. A. Cook has him looking very bright and

healthy, but bo far he has not been required to do any fast galloping, and has no near engagements. The Tatrarch Enjoys Life. The Tetrarch is still alive and well, but is retired from the stud. He is now enjoying life, in a large paddock with a box and an ever-open door, at his owner's place, Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Irelaud, where his son, Tetratema, stands. ' Consistent Circulation. In the eight-year-old mare Circulation, winner of the. Jockey Club Handicap at the Otago Hunt Meeting last Saturday, tlie Dunedin sportsman, Mr. L. C. llazlett, has a consistent performer, but one who has not always run with the luck on her side, as the unusually large proportion of place-money in her stake-earnings will indicate. Circulation won the Dunedin Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old, tlie Southland Handicap and the Provincial Handicap, Dunediu, at four years, tlie Southland Cup and Riverton Gold Cup the following season, and the Wyndham Cup at seven years, besides being runnerup in the Dunedin Cup. One of the first of the Paper Moneys, she is from the Charlemagne 11. mare, Sister Radius, who also raced m Mr. Hazlett's colours. Sister Radius is now 21 years of age, and is still at the stud. Her first progeny, Maghera and Loughrea1 (both by Ivilbroney), also had successful Turf careers. The "Count" in Form. Count Cavour was responsible for one of his old-time, track efforts iv a gallop with his brother, Gustavo, at Rieeartun on Saturday. The.pair finished together in front ot Rapina at the end of seveu furlongs, covered in lmin 33sec. Count Cavour completed his work full of running, and gave indications that he is far from being a spent force. Odds and Ends.
