COPYRIGHT FEES

B GLASS STATION DIFFICULTY

"If tlie demands for payment of copyright fees made two years ago are insisted upon, station 2ZP will go off the ail-,""stated Mr. W. A. Waters, president of the Manawatu Kadio Club, a few days ago. • Mr. Waters said that some time ago 2ZF were faced with a demand from the Australasian Performing Copyright Association for a royalty of 4d per item on gramophone records. This was held over by negotiation, but recently the association had notified all B class stations that they would be given grace to the end of September, after which royalty of copyright would be enforced. "At the present time 2ZF has to fill in a special form for each transmission, giving the name of each item, and composer, the form of rendition, etc., and send this to Sydney," said Mr. Waters. "In addition, there is a voluminous list of composers and publishers allied to the Copyright Association, whose works arc copyright,, and also a long list oi musical numbers that. are absolutely prohibited to be broadcast. So far the position in New Zealand is that legisln tion was passed regarding the Radio Broadcasting Company, and recently the Government finalised negotiations with the Sydney association whereby a percentage of listeners' licences was paid for the nse of copyright items for A stations."
