HURRICANE HAVOC
BRITISH WEST INDIES
REPORT TO COLONIAL OFFICE
British Official Wirelcis.
(Kcceivod 17th Sept., 11 a.m.)
RUGBY, 16th September
Tho Governor of the Leeward Islands Ims telegraphed tho Colonial Socretary that inspection after the recent hurricane showed the damage done was undoubtedly serious, making considerable assistance imperative. Six deaths have been reported and many are injured in tho Roseau Hospital and in the country districts. Half of the lime crop, 75 per cent, of tho coconut crop, and the whole of the late cocoa crop were destroyed. The crisis justified the new policy of grafting lime trees, since nearly all withstood tho hurricane. Food scarcity can be met by contributions received or promised. The total damage to public works is about £10,000, and to peasants' houses several thousands more.
