Mr John Ball was his forerunner in this great feat. The final day, which was favoured by d. '1, windless weather, was full of excitements. Kobsou disappointed Thursday's high British hopes by sur prisingly feeble putting. He took three putts on- seven greens in the third round, missing six under two feet. Yet ,he round revived the British supporters o the highest pitch of en tliusiasm, for Compston picked up five strokes on Jones by his marvellous record achievement of 68.' Hoyiake had not seen anything like.it. He began amazingly with 4, 3, 4, 2, and went out ill 34, despite a six at the fifth,, and continued inspiringly; his play was reminiscent qi" Duncan's at Saiidwieh in 1920. After a tremendous ovation at the end of the third round, however, Couypstou threw everything away bya miserable last round, taking 82. ■ His four-rounds scores wore thus 74, 73, 68, and 82. ,■ ■ ... ■ . ■ ' Jones throughout the 'meeting- found the first three holes a, regular hoodoo. He never once played them in decent figures, and his last /two "rounds were ■indifferent, .-giving chances to those within :striking distance, ..but- they proved unequal to the occasion.
