The senior hockey competition - _mes played on Saturday afternoon again provided two surprises in the A grade. V.M.C.A., who were expected to be held by Wesley, played first-class hockey and won, by 6 goals, to ,2. University also gave an attractive display against Karori, who were not up to their usual standard, and the game ended with the score agaiust the suburban team, 1-0. Wellington and Hutt played a drawn game, but Hutt appeared to be the superior. team. SENIOR A KARORI BEATEN. University brought off a surprise by defeating Karori. The Blacks had the bet-1 ter of the. game territorially ..in'-the. first I spell, but their forwards," although well supported by their, backs, lacked their usual finish. On the other hand, the .Uni-; yersity. forwards, Read, Bishop, and Paul,' in particular, played together remarkably well, and Button.-and Gumming, the fullbacks, broke up many of the Kai'ori forward movements.. When the Karori vanguard did get through, they found themselves up against formidable opposition in Davis, the goalkeeper, who played a very sound game.' At half-time there was no score, but shortly after the interval, the University backs suddenly turned defence into attack, and the forwards went away, Spence-Salea scoring from a rebound off.Moore in Karon's goal. The University players were combining well, and held their opponents in check for some time. Then Perrin set the Karori forward line in motion, and- an exciting tussle took place in the University circle. Davis kicked clear at last, and Robb's fol-lowing-up shot went , wide. Another promising Karori attack was spoilt by off-; side play. The game ended with the score unchanged- and Karori attacking. University 3, Karori 0. Messrs. J. W.Russell and H.J. Smith were the referees. A DRAWN GAME. ' The Wellington-Hutt game was fast and at times decidedly interesting, but the bumpy ground (Karori Park No. 2) spoilt many efforts at concerted play. , Wellington were expected to make a better showing than they gave. against Y.M.G.A. on the previous Saturday, but while their defence was an improvement-their attack lacked thrust, and the Hutt halves were able' to clear many times when matters 1 looked dangerous: M'Leod played an excellent game iv the half-line, and G. Lusty and Martis filled the positions of fullbacks with credit. At the end of the ■ first spell Hutt were leading by 1 goal- to nil, the scorer being Judd, but the resumption of play was followed by an equalising ' goal; from Lusty's stick. Play continued to be even until. M'Leod got possession of the ball just inside the Wellington territory and with a splendid effort carried it through to beat Guy and score. Honours were evenly divided if or some "time, but just before the final whistle the Wellington backs and forwards combined attractively and'were'conceded a corner, from which Lusty put-the teams on terms. Hutt'2,' Wellington 2. .Messrs. W; A. Scott aud'R.J. Lloyd controlled tlie game. ANOTHER V.M.C.A; SURPRISE; After their display against Karori oil the previous Saturday, Wesley were expected to dispose of V.M.C.A. without much difficulty, but they met their match and were defeated by 6 goals to 2. Both teams played attractive hockey of a higher standard than has been seen in most . senior games this season. Wesley appeared to have? slightly, the better of the opening play, but: inaccurate Ehooting resulted in several opportunities of scoring' going begging. Toe V.M.C.A. front line also penetrated the Wesley defence on several occasions, but Dykes, in goal, was in good form during , this spell. Towards: halftime Wesley pressed, and despite the best efforts of M'Donnell, the V.M.C.A. custodian, Phillpotts scored from a, penalty corner. - Wesley, maintained the pressure with the resumption, and within a few minutes Freethey had made the score Wesley 2, V.M.C.A. 0. .Then Young Men started to"-attack- in earnest. Play -was constantly in the Wesley territory, and by the time the final whistle went Young Men had scored'six goals as a result of splendid combination and sound stickwork. V.M.C.A. 6, Wesley 2. The scorers were BlacDonald (2), Pearman, Mead, Falconer,1 and Bennetts. Messrs. J. Cusack and W, Purves were the referees. SENIOR B A ONE-SIDED GAME. The game between University A and Wesley was very one-sided, and resulted in a win for University by 5 goals to nil. M'Donald (2), Ja'eobsen, 'MaeDuff, and Ferris scored for University. Mr. E. P. Staples was the referee. ' .'.-■■ ; WELLINGTON SUCCESSFUL. / University B' and Wellington played a very scrappy game, this being due, no doubt, to the very uneven state of the ground. At half-time Wellington led by 3 goals, to nil.'. University' played to better advantage in , the second spell, and were /successful' in opening their ' score, Fleming-, netting. r The scorers for. Wellington were: Weller (2) and Moliitt. Mr. W. Purves was the refereei . > •■ TRAINING COLLEGE BEATEN. Playing., at, Karori, Hutt A and Training College .provided a scrappy yet interesting: game. .Hutt attacked for ' the greater part of the game,-which ended with the score 2-1 in their favour. Stoupe scored, both goals for Hult, and Wiseley netted for Training College. Dr. A. F. Hickey was the . referee. . . DRAWN GAME, , A drawn game was played by V.M.C.A. and Hutt B at Kilbirnie, both teams scoring 2, goals, eacTi. As the score indicates the game .was very evenly matched.
