ALSATIAN DOG SHOW.
In' conucctlpn with' the Alsatian Dog Show at the Winter Show Buildings to-morrow, it Is interesting■■■ to. note that .tho ■ history of tho German shepherd dog is not half a century old. The inception of the breed was a German desire to develop from-their'own dogs an animal that should supersede and outclass the Scotch -. Collies;' then in great favour in that country, but of whom the complaint was that their jaws were too weak, states a well-known canine authority. Certain shepherds, whoso names appear in the German stud books, started experimenls^'Wlth a success, exceeding expectations, in crossing tho existing types of sheepdogs of Wurtemberg, in Southern Germany, with those of. Thuringla, in mid-Germany.. In England people have been deceived into an outcry against hiriif largely by- the1 description as; "wolf hound." .Hound In itself is a mistranslation from ..the German, his ' overseas description being' "Schaferhundc," and as for tlic term wolf, that ■Is as far-fetched as calling men apes. There ,is, In fact," no reliability in "any tales of- the wolf cross. The German shepherd dog has no relationship to tho wolf beyond the- common'ancestry running back into the very dark ages., The Alsatian wolf dog Is the one breed; amongst .the larger .ones which is not "too big'.td live in the house with his master. Giveyour Alsatian the free run of tlio house, make him' one of the family, and give his wonderful Intelligence an opportunity to develop. Teach him to be obedient .-indwell behaved.
