DEVASTATING CYCLONE
RIVER STEAMER CAPSIZES
DISASTER ON THE JUMNA'
■ CALCUTTA, 30th April. Only 24 of the 250 passengers 'and crew of the steamer lost on the River Jumna, in East Bengal, are definitely known to have been saved, and the death-roll is not likely to oe less than two hundred. The steamer, which was anchored half a mile from the banks, turned tnrtlo in five minutes after the cyclone | burst, carrying the majority of the pas-1 sengers, and crew with her. Only a few of the panic-stricken company donned life-belts. Five men were saved by clinging to a floating | gangway. Eight others took rafuge on' the steamer's hull, eighteen inches of which remained above water.. The cyclone lasted four and a half hours, causing widespread destruction. Many villages were wrecked, and hundreds of people are homeless.
