AT AVONDALE
AUTUMN TO WHITE FANG
GRAND TEA'S SURPRISE
.., ~ (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, 30th April. ■Fine weather favoured the'conclusion of the Avondale. Meeting to-day, but the track was slow, after rain yesterday. The racing was again. excellent,. several of the finishes being'very exciting. The Hastings trainer, W. C. Griffiths, accounted for a winning .double with White Fang and Royal Parade, who >ere both turned out in capital order. Several of the winners were at good prices, and Grand Tea, who was the outsider.but one in the Mount Roslrill Handicap returned over two-thirds of a century; There were, several falls, and Set Fair broke her neck when she tell in the Nursery Handicap. The totahsator for the'day/handled £34,120/ compared' with £35,018 10s last year, The total for the meeting -was' £76,209, compared with £79,025 10s. HOBSONVILLE HURDLES. The Hobßonville Hurdles was a decent betting race, with Roman • Abbey the favourite and Kauri Park a .well-backed fourth choice. Dark Prince and Roman Abbey led to the third fence, where Roman Abbey fell, leaving Dark Prince in the lead from Kauri Park, Wako King, and Mountain Guide. Dark Prmce and Mountain Guide were the leaders into the straight "just ahead of' Kauri Park and Wako King. Kauri Park .jumped the last two fences in great style, and he landed in front at'jihe last,: then staying on to win by a neck Mountain Guide. Dark Prince. was another neck away third, and Wako King, fourth. Good jumping stood to Kauri Park, wno jumped every fence well. Mountain Guide ran another good .race to notch his fourth successive second; and Dark Princes ef; fort' was highly- encouraging. Mangam was handy at:-the;: turn, but lacked the condition to. go ..on;.-'. -"■ v.1" DOMINION, HANDICAP. Sir Mond Was a good favourite for the Dominion ; with Hannibal and Stonehenge next in request. Stonehenge and Hannibal were smart to begin, but Stonehenge lost his position after going a couple'of iuHongs, when Wild Country, Operatic, and New Boy took up the running to lead found the bend from Hannibal and Sir Mond: Near the distance Sir Mond shot past the-leaders to win by a length from Operatic, who defeated Stone-hengel-by :half a ,'length. • Hannibal was fourth;, followed by Caulis, Principal, and Catoma. V; '■'■■■ , Sir Mond won well, and will score again soon. ■Operatic;-and Hannibal again ran good races, while Stonehenge finished on fast after"-losing a good position early. ; NURSERY HANDICAP. Two moderately fancied horses in Lady Court and Full Measure filled the dividend places in the Nursery Handicap, and both returned nice prices. Set Fair and King Ford had turns in the lead, and then Full Measure took charge from King Ford, Valley, and Biddy's Boy. Full Measure was clear at the distance, but tired in the last furlong; and lady Court, finishing on, got up to beat him by a length and a half Biddy's Boy was three parts of a length away ,third, and Karangapai. fourth. Next came Sargon and Waimuri. \ Lady Court went out wide at the home turn and then won well. Full Measure was made. too much use of early, otherwise he might have won. Valley and Set Fair fell at the foot of the straight, where Valley was well up.' Set Fair broke her neck, and Valley, who was'bleeding at the mouth when he .came in, sustained an injury to his jaw. WAITAKEREI HANDICAP. A good pool on the Waitakerei Handicap saw. Tenakoe, Prince of Orange, and British King at the head of the quota-, tions. British King led for about two furlongs, when Treasury rushed to the front. Treasury turned into the straight two lengths clear 6f" British King and Prince of Orange, witli Tenakoe and Cruaehan handy./. Prince of Orange was just in front" fit the distance, where Tenakoe dashed up oh the outside! with a strong, challenge. In a punishing finish Prince of : Orange, beat Tenakoe by half a head, Hipo being two and a half lengths away third* Cruaehan was fourth, followed by British King and Big Bertha. Prince of Orange just outstayed Tenakoe, who ran a: fine race for a first'attempt in open company. • British King had every chance and faded out just when he was expected to come on. AUTUMN HANDICAP. The Autumn Haadicap was a great betting race, with Eager Rose, Vali, and Paitonu the best backed. Gemlight and EagerRose were smartest away from an Uneven start, in; which.' Royal Doulton got badly away. ■■ Vali ran to the lead after going two .furlongs; and: then. True Blood, Kawainga, - and Prince Val became prominent. True Blood, Prince Val, and Owairaka .were the leaders into the straight from Kawainga, Eager Rose, and Vali, with. White "Fang next. Eager Rose was in'charge'at the distance, where White Fang challenged. Then Lucy Rose came with a late run on the outside, and a great finish saw White.Fang win by a neck from. Eager Rose, with Lucy Rose a head away third. Vali was fourth, followed by Royal Doulton and True Blood. Paitonu fell in the first furlong. ~. The placed horses came right away from the'others over the last furlong. White Fang, who' was at a good price, and Lucy Rose finished, brilliantly. Lucy Rose's turn should hot be long delayed how that the tracks, are becoming soft. Royal Doulton ran a great race after getting badly away, arid. : might have been right in it with a decent start. MOUNT EDEN HANDICAP. Royal Parade was. a slightly better favourite than* Lady Quex for the Mount Eden Handicap, with Valuation also well backed. Royal Parade was first away from a moderate start,, Gold Money being left about a 'dozen lengths. Awamutu ran to the front early, and showed the vfa j; round'the bend to Awarere, Branson, and Gold Money (wide out), with the others all handy. Awarere and Lady Quex were disputing the issue at the distance, with Royal Parade challenging. Royal Parade finished best to win by three parts of a length from Lady Quex, who defeated Awarere by a length. Valuation was a moderate fourth and Awamutu fifth. Royal Parade completed a stable double for the Hastings' trainer, W. C. Griffiths, who also trains White Fang. Lady Quex ran a great race under her big weight, and might have won on a dry track. Gold Money showed a torrent of speed after getting left, and was right up with tho leaders at the turn, MOUNT; ROSKILL HANDICAP. An outrider, in Grand Tea, who returned the largest dividend that has been paid in Auckland for some time, was responsible for a great surprise in the Mount Roskill Handicap, for which I'm Alone and Motere were the favourites. .Lucky Alice, Avoncourt, and Carl Idem led into the straight from Cu'rrajong, I'm 'Alone, and Grand Tea. -The leaders went out wide at the turn, and Grand Tea came through on the rails to win by a length and a half from
Avoncourt, who just beat Carl Idem for second. I'm Alone, was i'oui-th and Motore fiith. . Grand Tea relished the going, and was favoured with a line run. Avoncourt btayed out; the mile bctlci1 than expected, and returned a good price for second. Carl Idem was outside a couple of horses all the way, and was. not assisted when he waa tiilcen out wido- ,it the turn. I'm Alone had every chance, but Motere received- a rough passage, and was' never prominent until the finish, whore he was going <;rcat guns. niORNINGSIDE HANDICAP. Good wagering ou the Moniingside Handicap saw Standfast and Cynthia N. entrusted with most support. Page Boy, Honiton, and Sea Cob were smartest away, to l« the leaders into, the straight from King' Emerald, with the others bunched. Once in line for home Cynthia N. (on the rails) and Standfast came through, and Standfast beat Cynthia N. by a short head. Honiton was a close third, followed by Fage Boy1 and King Emerald. The winner is jiist striking his true form, and should be a Rood proposition through the winter, j Cynthia N. -was last early, but she was well ridden, by, 11. Gray, and was always. tin the rails. ■ Wild Time, who finished third in the AllAged Stakes, on. Saturday, was .purchased to-day by J.T. Jamieson. Results I—-..
