CLAIM AGAINST UNION

SUPERINTENDENT'S EVIDENCE

AUCKLAND, This Day. Allegations that he had been victimised by the Auckland Watersiders Union were made by Thomas Moylan, otherwise known as Thomas Miles, who in the Supreme Court sued the union and Robert Irvine, the union's walking delegate, for damages at the i-ate of £6 a week since 23rd March, 1929, and £500 in addition. Moylan alleged that practically daily the, union had ro-^ fused a permit to any employer to engage him. The union and Irvine completely denied the allegations. In evidence, Captain Anderson, ■wharf superintendent for the Union Company, said h.e telephoned to Irvine several times, saying he was going to engage Moylau. His. ,reply was "If you do, the ship will be stuck up." Witness said he had reason to believe Irvino was inciting the men. Pressed to give a reason, the witness said he preferred, not to as it might affect his relations with the union. Mr. Justice Smith: "It is a most astounding suggestion,, that the union can damage Captain Anderson." Witness: "I am positive of it. They can give me the go slow policy tr/nes out of number. I did not come here of my own free will." Instructed by the Judge to answer, the witness said Irvine had spoken of Miles as "A pimp to the police."
