VIOLENCE IN GAOL
PRISONERS MUTINY
SEQUEL TO RECENT FIRE
(Received 30th April, 10 a.m.) MONTBEAL, 29th April. A message from Columbus states that the Ohio State penitentiary, where 322 convicts were burned to death a week ago, was the scene of new violence to-J day, when guards with sawed-off shotguns fired upon unruly prisoners. Twenty convicts are reported to have been wounded. For a'week the convietß have been in more or less open mutiny against the Waidon and' the-prison administration, and have been trying to smash their.; cells as a protest over the manner in which the locked-up convicts were burned to death. Martial law was declared to-day and the Warden is surrendering his command to the j military from a nearby army post.
