MORE RAIN
WEATHER DUE TO IMPROVE
With'a further 139 points of rain since 9 aim. yesterday morning, Wellington 's total* rainfall for the fortyeight hours ending at 9 a.m. to-day has been 230 points, which is the best soaking that the ground has had since January last. The small cyclone responsible for the general rain of the last two days has filled up since last night, and no trace of it is to be found on this morning's weather map. Coinciding with its disappearance has been a decrease; in the force of the southerly winds and an easing off in the rain, although showers are still -in evidence in many places. The North Island has had the bulk of the rainfall, the, country south of Greymouth and Akaroa generally experiencing fair weather. Thunder has been reported from several stations, and at 9 a.m. to-day-there was a thunderstorm at Opotiki, where the river was in flood. Locally the conditions yesterday were very miserable, the cold southerly rain continuing all day and during1 last night too. '■■;'. Auckland had its share of the rain yesterday, heavy falls occurring during the afternoon and evening. A thunderstorm, in the afternoon was a feature of the city's unsettled weather. In Christchurch bleak conditions prevailed before the setting in, about noon, of rain which fell until 7 p.mt A total of 22 points was recorded, more falling in the surrounding country. Bather' cold and unsettled weather prevailed in Dunedin, with a light southwesterly wind, but no rain has fallen there since Monday night. The forecast issued at noon to-day indicates that the prevailing unsettled and showery weather may be expected to improve gradually. Moderate to strong westerly to south-westerly winds will decrease in force* . Cool temperatures will continue to prevail, with inland frosts in the South. Island.
