WHENTHE COURT ADJOURNED
HUNTING FOUR ELEPHANTS
i ""We were always out after, game in. I Uganda. I have shot elephants .and | practically every kind of game within three miles of our station," stated Mr. Temple Perkins at the Uotary Club yesterday. Mr. Perkins is an old Wellington boy and for ten years a dis-_ trict Commissioner in that part of Africa. "I was sitting quietly in the Courthouse and had-just decided to adjourn at 4 o'clock one afternoon, when a boy came in to say that 'the primp minister 5 had four elephants destroying his crops, I at ones got my guns, went four miles ,out by car, and found tho four elephants in a river bed, down a 30ft bank. I shot two of them and tho other two ran away, charging through a 12ft wall of papyrus. I thought that was goodbye to them, and went down tJie bauk —fortunately putting t\vo more cartridges quite automatically into my r ifl e —to see if the two I had shot wcio quite dead. The first was deadj. but I noticed an eyelid of the second flicker and was just about to give it tho 'coup de grace' when I heard a shrill scream and, looking up, saw tho two that had run away charging straight for me, ono behind the other. I shot one of them in the forehead, but only .wounded him, and he came on with tho other close behind. I had one cartridge left, and there were two elephants. I fired once more and again wounded the first; elephant and the other mado off?. I tried to 'get out of tho wind' of tho wounded elephant, and lay low for three minutes or so, trying not to breathe and to feel as pleasant as possible. (Laughter.) Then, fortunately, my boy with a rifle at tho 'top of the bank saw that something wns wrong, came down with tho rifle and I polished, the elephant off."
