In the April examinations held by the Marino Department, Mr. C. A. V. Tilleyshort passed for his second engineer's certificate, and Messrs. A. It. M'Leod, it. M. Smiley, and 11. G. MacAuley for their third-class marine engineer's certificates. Captain W. Wahlatrom has relieved Captain W. MacMlllan of the command of the Gunbar. Mr. "Mac" M'Giil, who lias been In the employ of the Union Company for forty-six years, during the last nine of which he has operated the main lift in the company's offices, is retiring to-day. At the mid-period Marine Department's nautical examination, which was conducted at Auckland, last week, Uie following successes were registered, all the candidates being .pupils of the Richmond Nautical School: —Foreigngoing masters of steamships: Messrs. C. T. Robb and C. H. Vincent. Second mates (foreigngoing) : Mr. B. B. .Hughes (square rig) and ,Mr. D. K. Matheson (fore and aft rig). First mate (home trade) : Mr. D. E. Collins. River master: Mr. A. Walsh. ISLANDS SERVICES. MAUI POMARE, leaves Auckland 6th May for Niue and Apia, and is due at Niue 13th May, and at Apia 15th Mny. TOFUA, from Auckland, via Suva, Nukualofa, and Haapai, is due at Vavau to-day and at Apia to-morrow. She leaves Apia at noon on Friday for Suva, thenco for Auckland. ' WAIPAHI, from Apia, is due at Auckland on 2nd May. She leaves again on 3rd May for Cook Islands. WAIMARINO -COMING. Tho Waiinarino, the last of tho Union Steam Ship Company's five new cargo steamers, is reported to havo left England under Captain A. S. Dalglcish for New Zealand, via Durban. She is duo at Dunedin early In July, and proceeds thenco to Lyttelton and Auckland. Constructed on similar lines to tho- Walplata, the Wainiai'ino is a single-screw steamer, witli a gross tonnage of 3030, length of 320 ft, ft moulded breadth of 46.7 ft, and moulded depth of 25.5 ft. Tho machinery was supplied by John Klneaid and Co., Ltd., Groenock, and she was launched early last month from tho Ardrossan Dockyard, Ltd., Ardrossan. On arrival In New' Zealand she will enter the Dunedin-Wcllington-Auckland service. THE REMUERA. , The Romuera, which • sailed from Wellington on 2nd April for Southampton and London, left Caracas Bay on Sunday. SOMERSET AT NEW YORK. The Somerset, which sailed from Auckland on 2Sth March for New York, Halifax, .and London, arrived at New York on Monday.
