NCAIO HISTORICAL PAGEANT

, A most successful historical pageant of New Zealand events and personages was given,byNgaib School on Saturday.

The opening ceremony was held at the evening performance, when Mr, X.: A.1 ,^Yright, M.P., congratulated Ngaio on its show, which was an effort by the district to help itself. , •

Mr. W. H, Field, M.P,;. spoke in reminiscent mood of the early days of the locality:^ _ .. ■ ■ ■ " . ■

v Mr. Ingram, of the Home and School/ Association, referred to benefits derived -from the keen interest of parents in a school. He deplored apathy towards school work, and commended to them the Home and School Association. Mr. Daniels, chairman of the school committee, also spoke. ■'■'.-'

The open-air-stage was surrounded by a large crowd of spectators as the children, dressed as Maoris or early colonists, began the pageant. It typified in order the great migration of 1350, Captain Cook's arrival, the Missionary Samuel Maysden, arrival of settlers in Wellington, Treaty of Waitangi, Maori wars, and the union of Maori and pakeha. Poi dances, linkas, nrid Maori songs were also given. The acting was natural and well done, reflecting the greatest credit on the teachers. The Island Bay State School Band played during the afternoon, and items were given by an orchestra in the evening. A most satisfactory financial result is expected.
