ASSISTANT SECRETARY

MR. G. C. RODDA APPOINTED

The Public Service Commissioner announced to-day that he had appointed Mr. G. C. ltodda., at present assistant accountant to tin; Treasury, to the position of Assistant Secretary to the Treasury, etc., previously held, by Mr. A. D. Park, who recently became Secretary to the Treasury on the retirement of Mir. ft. E. Hayes. . .

Mr. Kodda ■ was born at Stafford, VVestland, in 1878, his parents .having arrived fi'oni England in the early colonial days, and his father being a wellknown man in Westland, and a J.P. for many- years. Mr. Itodda received his secondary education at the Hokitika High School, at which he was the holder of a scholarship, nud he matriculated in 1594. ' As a result of passing the Junior Civil Service Examination, he, joined the Government Life Insurance Department as a cadet in that year, and served both at. Wellington and at Napier. In .1902 he was transferred to the Treasury, On the outbreak of war in 1914 he was attached to the Defence Department as officer in charge of war expenses, the work of which.involved the accounting for ,-the whole of the war expenditure for which New Zealand assumed liability, also the payment of allotments, wives',, children's, and other allowances to dependants and relatives of members of the New Zealand 1-iXpeditionarv Forces. At one stage of. Ihis work the staff employed under him reached a t,otal of 500. . In June, 191.9, he received the M.B.E. decoration for these services, and returned to the Treasury in the following year.' In 1921 i\io 'passed the Professional Accountants' Examination, and was admitted as a member of the New Zealand Society of. Accountants in 1922. In 1025 he was promoted to the position of Chief Inspector of the Treasury, and in the following year to the position of Assistant. Accountant. Mr. Rodda has also occupied, tlie position of secretary to the Jjocal Government Loans board since its inception. \
