TONGARIRO PARK
LAND FOR GOLF LINKS
TOLL FEES ABOLISHED
A meeting of-the Tongariro National Park Board was held in the office of the chairman (Mr. .J. B. Thompson, Under-Secretary for Lands) yesterday. Present: The chairman and Messrs. W. H. Field, M.P., B. C. Aston, representing the New Zealand Institute, E. Phillips Turner, Director of Forestry, and S. J. Collett, Acting-General Manager, Department of Tourist and Health Resorts.
The question of granting a lease of further areas to the Tongariro Park Tourist Co., Ltd., to complete the laying out of the golf links and to accommodate additional-buildings was considered. The board decided to proceed with the lease, which covers an area of about S5 acres immediately adjoining the land now held under lease by the company. The chairman explained that to provide an 18-hole course it was necessary that the additional land should be made available immediately, as the work in connection with the laying down1, of the fairways and greens was well in hand, and the links would probably be ready for play next year. The question of revoking the bylaw providing for toll charges for vehicles on the Bruce road was also considered, and in this connection the chairman explained that he had been in touch with the Main Highways Board in regard to declaring the Bruce road as a main highway. The Highways Board had now agreed to take" over the road, and an Order-in-Couiicil declaring the road to be a main highway was published in this week's "Gazette." .A resolution revoking the bylaw was passed by the board, and immediate instructions were issued to the park ranger that no further tolls on the Bruce road or Ohakune track were to be collected from, the public. The chairman explained that grading and metalling work were in hand by arrangement with the company, so as to have the Bruce'road in condition at the date of taking over. A permanent bridge will be required over the Whakapapanui Stream, and the board will undertake this work in ,the near future. . The .chairman also reported that the Public Works Department had completed one mile fifteen chains of the road to. Tama Lakes, and that at the present time the men were employed on the Scoria Flat road.
