COLD-BLOODED MURDER
POISONING FOR PLEASURE
NEW YORK, 20th February. A Detroit messago states that tho arrost to-day of James Baker, aged 25, revealed ono of tho strangest and craftiest murders by one who poisoned eight persons cold-bloodedly in various cities of the world from Now York to Bombay, Manila, and Hamburg, and shot and killed his stepfather. He had worked at every trade from sailor and farm hand to an assistant in a chemical laboratory, and when caught he
had enough poison in his room to destroy a thousand persons.
The crimo which resulted in his undoing was of forcing poison down the throat of a nightwatchuian in a New York building in 1928. Ho- had been sought by detectives ever since.
Baker confessed that he did not kill for revenge or anger, although ho said ho had quarrelled with his stepfather.
"I killed to watch tho effect of poison. Anyone who was around when tho impulsa seized mo would die."
