VARIABLE WEATHER
A TEMPORARY IMPROVEMENT
Pressure lias risen since last night, the shallow depression which crossed the South Island yesterday having 'been followed by a slight anti-cyclone. Yesterday was dull and misty over most of the Dominion, and light rain fell at many places, but at Awanui a heavy fall occurred during the night. The winds, which have been variable, had by 9 a.vi. to-day become mainly southerly over the North Island, and a fairly general improvement in the weather had taken place . At Auckland the weather was cloudy yesterday, and light westerly showers fell during the afternoon. This morning it was line with a light south-wes-terly wind. Wellington had dull and somewhat threatening conditions but no rain fell. The wind changed to southerly early this morning, and at 9 a.m. it was clearing rapidly. After a dull morning, Christchurch had a fine sunny afternoon. At 6 p.m. the north-east wind backed to south-westerly, and at 9 p.m. a very heavy shower fell. The wind was again north-easterly by this morning, with the weather fine. Dunedin experienced a dull morning with a fine afternoon yesterday, and it has remained fine sine© with light winds. The forecast is for the winds tending to become northerly generally, and later freshening, gale force being reached in places. The weather is likely to be fine generally at first, but clouds increasing to-morrow, and the weather gradually becoming unsettled, with rain developing, at first in western and southern districts.
