PICNICS

TELEPHONE BRANCH.

The annual picnic of the telephone branch of the Post Office was held at Irentham on Saturday last. Rain detracted from the pleasantness of an otherwise enjoyable gathering, and prevented the attendance of those members-of the staff required to remain at work in the city until midday. Thorough arrangements were made for the entertainment of both adults and children. At the conclusion of the sports programme the District Telegraph Engineer (Mr. J.. M'Dermott) handed trophies to the following successful competitors:— 100 yards open handicap: M'lntyre 1, Allan 2. Boots and sack race: Rogers 1, Wilson Thread-the-needle race: Wilsou 1, Newton 2. Cigarette race: Mrs. Callan and Kennedy 1, Miss Walker and Scadden 2. Three-legged race: Miss Calver and Allan 1, Miss M'Lean and Wilkinson 2. HIS MASTER'S VOICE AND E. J. HYAMS.

The combined staffs of His Master's Voice (N.Z.), Ltd., and E. J. Hyams, Ltd., held their annual picnic at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt, last Tuesday. The party journey by motor-cars an:l buses, and complete arrangements had been made at the grounds for the enjoyment of young and ■ old. The directors of the companies received the hearty thanks of those present for their generosity in providing everything necessary to make the outing a thorough success.

Games, refreshments, and prize-giving brought a very pleasant day to a close, the success of which was in no small degree attributable to the energetic committee.
